The Life Sentence Unit or the Public Protection Branch (depending on the type of sentence) acting on behalf of the Department of Justice, will refer the prisoner's case to the Commissioners for review shortly after his/her return to Prison.
In this section "Department of Justice" can be taken to mean either the Life Sentence Unit or Public Protection Branch.
The Commissioners will write to the prisoner to let them know that their case has been referred to them. The letter, known as the ‘Notice of Referral’, will list the dates by which certain things need to be done by the Department of Justice and by the prisoner and/or their representative so that his/her case can be completed speedily. It is very important that the prisoner and their representative keep a note of these dates and that the prisoner is clear about what he/she has to do.
